There was a time when building a robot, programming a weather station, or creating an automated garden required a degree in computer science and a massive laboratory. From Giant Mainframes to Microchips In the mid-20th century, computers like the ENIAC were the size of entire rooms, operated exclusively by government scientists and military personnel. The invention of the microprocessor in the 1970s shrank these machines down, giving birth to the first home computers. However, for decades, the internal hardware remained a closed ecosystem—you could type on it, but you couldn't easily attach motors, lights, or sensors to interact with the physical world.

The Italian Design School that Changed Everything (2005) The true democratization of hardware happened in 2005 at the Interaction Design Institute Ivrea in Italy. A professor named Massimo Banzi wanted his design and art students to be able to create interactive projects, but the available microcontrollers were too expensive and required complex engineering knowledge. So, Banzi and his team created their own open-source, inexpensive, and easy-to-use board: the Arduino. It was named after a local bar where the founders used to meet.

The Raspberry Pi and the Modern Maker A few years later, in 2012, the UK-based Raspberry Pi Foundation released a fully functioning computer the size of a credit card, designed to promote basic computer science in schools. Together, Arduino and Raspberry Pi sparked the modern "Maker Movement."
